Julissa Thaler, a Minnesota woman, was found guilty of killing her 6-year-old son, Eli Hart, only days after regaining full custody. The case entailed a lengthy custody struggle for Eli, who had previously been in foster care.
Despite concerns about Thaler’s capacity to establish a safe environment, he regained custody soon before dying. Eli was found dead in the trunk of Thaler’s automobile on May 20, 2022.
It was later determined that Julissa had shot Eli nine times in the head and torso area of his body. Likely while he was strapped in his car seat.
The brutality of the act stunned the community and prompted doubts about Thaler’s capacity to reclaim custody, despite previous misgivings. Thaler was arrested and charged with second-degree murder, with prosecutors presenting compelling evidence against her.
The defense claimed that Thaler was not mentally competent at the time of the crime, but this did not persuade the jury. Thaler was convicted of first-degree premeditated murder and sentenced to life in prison without parole. The case has caused criticism and calls for reforms to Minnesota’s child protection system.

May 20 th , 2022, police in Minnesota were alerted to a suspicious vehicle moving through the area ,it’s rear windshield shattered, sparks flying as it rolled along on a bare rim where where a tire should have been.

Officers located the silver Chevrolet impala and initiated a stop, unaware that the encounter they were stepping into would soon expose one of the most disturbing child homicide cases the city had ever seen.

Behind the wheel was 28 year old Julissa Thaylor, from the start, something felt off.
She appeared restless, evasive , and unable to give a clear explanation for the condiction of her vehicle, she claimed that neighborhood kids had fired paintballs at her car, somehow shattering the glass, and even knocking off a tire.
But the level of damage didn’t match the story,It’ wasn’t minor vandalism, it was destrcution…

Ask officers continued speaking with her , new concerns emerged.

Blood was visible on her hands , smeared across surfaces inside the car.
Julissa insisted it was from meat she had been transporting as groceries, claiming she had thrown it away after glass contamination.
Her answers were circular, inconsistent, and increasingly strained, each time the conversation drifted toward the trunk, her agitation noticeably escalated.

At first , officers allowed Julissa to leave the scene with a courtesy ride while the vehicle remained detained .

But something didn’t sit right .
A supervising officer returned to conduct a more thorough inspection .
The damamge , the blood , the implausible explanations, one question kept resurfacing quitely but persistently.
What was in the trunk?

After careful consideration, officers made the decision to open it.
Inside , beneath a blanket, was the body of a child.
His head was missing, the discovery was immediate and devastating and moved quickly to locate Julissa.

What had started as a traffic stop had now become a homicide investigation.
One involving a parent and her own child.

A rapid search followed, when officers went to Julissa’s apartment , they found she had already fled.
Inside a washing machine was still running , churning blood stained clothing.

Surveillance footage showed Julissa leaving the apartment minutes erlier with a man later identified as her boyfriend , Rob.

While one group traced their movements, others followed up on Julissa’s earlier claimes about where she’d been, near a shell gas station witnesses reported seeing her discard multiple into dumpsters.
What investigators recovered was deepley distrubing.

A child’s booster seat, torn apart by a shotgun blast.

A backpack containing bone fragments.

and schoolwork beloning to a 6 year old boy .

Named Eli Heart.

Surveillance footage showed from the apartment complex

showed Julissa placing Eli into the backseat of her car earlier that same day.
It was the last known image of him alive.

Julissa and Rob was located walking nearby and taken into custody without incident.

During interrogation,Julissa refused to confront what police had found,
Her explanation shifted constantly, suggesting unknown attackers, claiming she’d been assaulted, blaming her ex husband, introducing new versions…only when earlier once collapsed.
But investigators already had what they needed ; phone data , surveillance timeline forensic evidence, and records showing she had recently purchased shotgun ammunition.
Each piece pointed to the same conclusion.

Eventually , they confronted her directly, the child in the trunk was her son.
Further investigation revealed that Eli had been killed inside the vehicle , likely while still secured in his booster seat.
Ballistics and location data suported that conclusion.

Prosecutors later disclosed another devastating detail, Eli was prellingually deaf, unable to hear or call for help in his final moments.
As the case unfolded, it exposed a broader failure beyond the crime itself.
Social services had received multiple reports varning of Julissa’s instability, substance abuse and violent behavior.
Custody disputes, and red flags had been documented, yet despite those concerns, Eli had been retruned to her care just days before his death.

In February 2023, after less than two hours of jury deliberation.
Julissa Thaler was convicted of first -degree murder and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
She maintained her innocence to the end, the evidence did not.

Eli’s father later received a wrongful death settlement exceeding $ 2 million but no verdict, no sentence and no compensation could undo what was lost or erase the system failures that allowed warning signs to be ignored until it was far too late.
This case remains a stark reminder of how easily unimaginable violence can hide behind routine encounters and how a single traffic stop became the moment a tragedy long unfolding in silence was finally revealed.
And finally , this last report didn’t lead to an arrest.
A finding or even evidence, only an experience both officers still question …
Highligths
The following footage has never been released to the public.

Spring Park , Minnesota, on May 20th,2022 , officers from the Orono Police departement began their morning patrol when they saw a Chevy Impala driving without a tier.

They make a U- turn to follow the vehicle and noticed a shattered back window.

And bullet holes on the side of the car.
The vehicle breaches several traffic violations, they quickly turn their sirens on and pull the vehicle over.
They have no idea what this sinple traffic stop would soon turn into.

The driver appears to be incoherent.
But briefly explains to the officer that the damage to her car was caused by paintballs and BB bullets shot at her earlier this morning.

The suspect’s story clearly doesn’t align with the wreckage seen all across the interior and exterior of her car,it seems she realizes this as well and quickly begins panicking as officers investigate further.

Despite the peculiar events that just took place, an officer would follow with standard procedure and head back to his patrol vehicle to run a registration.

As 28 year old Julissa Thaler.

A mother living just a few blocks away in the Bay View apartment.

The officer would continue by calling Julissa’s recovery sponsor to confirm whether or not Julissa had met her this morning .
As she had claimed just minutes ago.
Julissa spends the next few minutes repeatedly asking the officers to leave.
Her tone becoming more and more hostile,Officers have no clear probably cause to detain her and contemplate giving her police escort home.

But as they returned back to her vehicle , they noticed something far more distrubing then they had seen earlier.

Officers notice blood splattered on the vehicle’s roof , as well as blood spray across the exterior of the vehicle.

In addition to the shotgun shell casings , shattered window and missing tire , a clear picture begins to form as to what could have happened inside the vehicle.

But despite the suspicion, Julissa continues to find new excuses for every oddity the officers discover.

Investigators would soon find this dumpster and recover a bloody trash bag just Julissa had had claimed.
However, the bag would not contain the remains of a deer, but rather something more terrifying.
Back at the crime scene, the Arano County deputy Chief would arrive to make a decision on how the investigation should proceed

But before he could even make it to the vehicle,Julissa would waste no time in explaining her side of the story.

Julissa would proceed to identify her boyfriend as 27 year old Robert Pikkarainen .
Officers quickly discovered that Robert has an extensive criminal history, including domestic violence, mental instability and more,Officers would discuss their opinions on what could have happened
And quickly make it clear that they believe Robert may be the culprit behind whatever happened inside that vehicle.

Since a search warrant may be needed to further investigate the vehicle, two officers make the decision to abide by Julissa’s demands and drive her back to her apartment.
In reality, more than enough evidence was discovered for the officers to claime probable cause and search the vehicle.

This lack of communication would turn out to be.
One of the many grave mistakes made by the officers during this investigation and allow Jalissa to nearly escape entirely.

But for now , an officer would calmly take Jalissa back to her apartment.

As Julissa makes her way into the building, she frantically attempts to evade the grave situation she just got herself into.
Aggressively banging on the glass for someone to let her in.
Lindsay Olsen , the apartment’s property manager , would eventually let her into the building ,and within minutes , Jalissa would go to her room.

Then run out the back exit alongside her boyfriend.
The couple escapes without anyone noticing and makes their ways towards the freeway.

Back at the crime scene , the officer returns after dropping Julissa off.
It wouldn’t take long before he’d realize the terrible misstake he had just made.

When officers open the trunk , they discover a small body wrapped in a shower towel.
The body appeared to be dismembered, missing various body parts.

Everyone on scene manages to hold their composure after what they ‘ve just witnessed.

and devise a plan to raid Jalissa’s apartment building.

Within 15 minutes , patrol vehicle arrive at the building carrying nearly a dozen officers and multiple bulletproof shields.

As officers continue clearing the apartment .

They realize both Jalissa and her boyfriend are nowhere to be found.

Knowing she had completely tricked them, officers rush over to the building’s property manager to check their cameras.

A patrolling officer notices the exact description of the suspect being radioed just a short distance away and wastes no time taking advantage of this near miracle spotting.

Julissa calmy watches officers detain her boyfriend.

And while Robert may appear suspicious, his remarks about knowing what was going on would turn out to be completely true.

While boths suspects sit inside the patrol vehicles ,officers briefly discuss the chaos that had just erupted.

The officers are shaken by the vile details of the case ,which would only worsen as they located the dumpster Jalissa had claimed to throw her deer meat into.

The officer would bring the trash bags to the station and discovered shotgun ammunition.
multiple skull fragments, and what he says could only be described as;
“handfulls of brain matter”

Additionally,he would find the pastel pants Jalissa had worn on the night before the murder , the pants had straks of blood on them .

While officers transport Jalissa to the station , she wastes no time in accusing Robert of the murder entirely.

While Jalissa continues throwing accusation towards her boyfriend, he’d be brought into the very same holding room .
Jalissa would continue talking from another room, unaware he had just walked in.

Both suspects would be held in Orono County Police station , and for the next 2days, investigators would begin piecing together a timeline of their tracks.

At 11 p.m. the night before , Jalissa and her son Eli are seen on the BayView apartment security cameras.

Jalissa is alone and can be seen placing her shotgun into the trunk of her car, she straps Eli into his booster seat , then leaves the building.

Later, at 5: 00., witnesses report seeing a gray Chevy Impala driving without a tire.

A family’s home security captures their dog reacting to the vehicle’s headlights.

At 6:30 a.m., the car is seen back on the road and makes a stop at the shell gas sation .

Dozens of witnesses watch the wheelless car screech by them .

Witnessess would watch as Jalissa grabs bloody trash bags from the inside of her car and throws them into the gas station’s dumpster.

This dumpster contained the trash bags full of brain matter which the officers had confiscated earlier.

The next time she is seen on camera is during the traffic stop, she has the same top on from the night before , but different pants, a key distinction in this timeline is that Jalissa is alone for the entire night and the ealy morning .

the only Time Robert was spotted on camera was when the couple snuck out out the back of the Bayview before being arrested.

Regardless , based on Robert’s suspicious behavior and the fact that he coerced Jalissa to try and flee from officers, investigators had every right to assume that he had something to do with the murder.

They’d sit him down in the Orono County jail for a formal interview ,preparing to try and gain a a confession out of Robert.

However , what they got instead would be far more perplexing.

About a month ago Jalissa applied for a permit to purchase a fire arm, a week later , she went to shakabe Fish and Firearms, but didn’t buy antything.

On may 19th, one day before the traffic stop, Jalissa and Robert would go to the allseason sport and purchase a shotgun alongside 40 rounds of ammunition, they ‘d quickly go to a gun range to test out their new weapon before heading home for the night.

Robert seems to be geuinely shocked that detectives assume he was responsible for Eli’s murder, he has little to prove his innocence.
Robert’s best plan of action would be to ask for a lawyer and let the forensic evidence prove his alibi.
However ,he decides to continue to talking, only making the situation worse for himslef.

Robert makes it clear he had no involvement in Eli’s death whatsoever.
Robert can’t be seen on any camera alongside Jalissa ,the night of Eli’s death, and detectives have nothing to accuse him of other than Jalissa’s scrambled accusations.
Following this.
Detectives would send Robert’s phone off to be analyzed for movement patterns to determine whether or Robert was infact sleeping the entire night of the murder.
Meanwhile ,just 30 minutes later, detectives would sit down with Jalissa for a formal interrogation.
They plan to catch Jalissa in a web of lies.
However ,one crucial mistake would leave everything said in the interrogation

Fully exempt from her trial .
When Jalissa asks for a lawyer, by law the investigation must cease immediately.
The interview can only resume if Julissa purposely and intentionally initiates further conversation.

Julissa doesn’t do this , so , in hopes of outsmarting the legal system, the primary detective decides to get Julissa to talk by placing pictures infront of her .
He thinks this is plausible since technically he isn’t asking any questions.
This tactic won’t hold up in court, leaving everything Julissa proceeds to admit completely exempt from investigation.

Following the interrogation , both Julissa and Robert would stay in the county prison awating trial ,Robert wouldn’t stay long as detectives saw no movement on his phone the night of Eli’s death.
Alongside CCTV showing Julissa left with Eli alone at 11 . p.m., he was quickly ruled out of the investigation .

The same can’t be said for Julissa , who would be charged with first and second degree murder for the death of her son , Eli.
She was held on a $ 2,000,000 Bond and would sit in jail for nearly 6 mpnths before the start of her trial .

Julissa pleaded not guilty, continuing with her alibi that …

… both Robert and her ex – boyfriend forced her at gunpoint and eventually killed Eli.

Robert would take the stand, testifying that he and Eli were playing with their kittens when Julissa began hitting them.

She grabbed her shotgun and as well as Eli and went downstairs.
He’d fall asleep and wake up to Julissa insisting they need to leave and that the police were after them assuming they were wanted for drugs .

He obliged , official reports claim Robert held back tears while describing the story.

On the day of Julissa’s centencing , she would leave the jury with one final message;
Um, i’m innocent, fuck you all, you’re garbage.”
Even Julissa’s public defender couldn’t help feel embarrassed, knowing her client’s fate had already been sealed.

She would later apologize to the judge for her vulgar statements.

But it ‘d be all too late, on February 16th ,2023,Julissa Thaler was convicted on both murder charges and was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
She will likely stay behind bars until the day she dies. ..
