A homeless man found her remains on July 18, 2026, inside an abandoned building in the Kypseli district of central Athens. A preliminary autopsy indicated the cause of death was asphyxiation.
Greek police arrested Sharif Ahmadzai, a 26-year-old former refugee and amateur boxer from Afghanistan, who was also involved in the local refugee support scene.
The suspect’s American wife played a pivotal role in his arrest. Suspicious of his behavior, she used a tracking app to trace his phone to the apartment where Ross was last seen before her disappearance, and subsequently alerted authorities.
Ahmadzai was charged with intentional homicide, robbery, and weapons offenses. hmadzai’s wife sees a text message from Ross to Ahmadzai thanking him for agreeing to accompany her somewhere. Ross tells her friends she is heading to Kypseli to meet American acquaintances.
Ahmadzai’s wife wakes up to find her husband missing. She uses a mobile tracking app and traces his location directly to the apartment where Ross was staying. When confronted later, he claims he was just using the toilet after visiting a café.
July 16, 2026: Athens police recover city CCTV footage showing Ahmadzai wheeling a heavy, large suitcase through the streets.
July 18, 2026: A homeless man looking through a derelict car showroom in the Kypseli neighborhood discovers Ross’s body hidden inside the suitcase.
The Cover-Up & Arrest
After the murder, Ahmadzai allegedly used Ross’s phone to text her family, claiming she “needed time alone” to delay missing-person reports. According to Greek newspapers Proto Thema and Ta Nea, he then used a separate phone to text her friends while impersonating a jihadist, claiming he killed her because of her Christian faith.
This staging was shattered when his wife realized his behavior was erratic, noted he was suddenly flush with cash, and gave her digital tracking data to the Hellenic Police. Ahmadzai was caught after stealing over €10,000 from Ross’s bank accounts.
Sharif Ahmadzai has not been sentenced; he was remanded in custody following his court appearance in Athens on August 6, 2026, after being charged with the murder of Scottish aid worker Elisabeth Jane Ross. Legal proceedings and the investigation are still ongoing.
