The term organised crime often conjures up images of Italian mobsters ruling over an urban cityscape, using violence and corruption to secure protection and wealth. However, organised crime dates back centuries, predating even the creation of the Sicilian Mafia, to a time when pirates, bandits, and highwaymen roamed rural roads and the seas, seeking to steal whatever they could get their hands on.
In fact, the earliest iterations of organised crime were nowhere near as glamorous as the lives of many involved in such groups in more modern settings, and by all accounts, it has never been a noble cause, often destructive to society and leaving many victims in its wake.
